The summer is rapidly disappearing and it is time to
look back on all we have achieved in Area 2 this year, and also to plan ahead
for next season.
Clinics have been a regular feature throughout 2008. We have
managed to hold one nearly every month and even squeezed in an extra trail
clinic in August, in preparation for the September show. These clinics have
been well attended and really good fun and have provided a fantastic learning
situation. Even if you are not bringing your horse to the next clinic come
along to watch. You can often pick up some useful tips watching others have a
go. Thank you to the organisers, and to Scherie for her unfailing good spirits
and encouragement!
For something completely different, we held a trail ride up at
Kelsall Hill cross country course on 17th August. This year the gods were kind
to us and we didn't have to put up with torrential rain (just the occasional
heavy shower!) and those of us who took it on had a very enjoyable ride over
lovely grassy tracks, through woods and even a paddle in a large water obstacle
(yes, there are photos to prove we did it!), which we all negotiated without
being dunked! Hopefully, we will repeat this event next
year.
Our
second show of the season was held on 7th September at Tushingham Arena and,
despite a clash of events, we had a very good turnout and some nice weather.
Our judge for the day was Bob Mayhew who, with the assistance of Sally
Chamberlain, did a fantastic job making the day such a success. Bob provided
constructive criticism and guidance throughout the day, which we all
appreciated, and it certainly helped to reduce competitor's nerves and, at the
end of the show, he held an impromptu clinic for those wishing to stay behind.
A big thanks must go to all the members of the show team who, once again, gave
of their spare time to ensure the smooth running of the show. Refreshments and
hot drinks were always on hand and the whole day ran like clockwork. Don't
forget, if you are a non-rider at a show or clinic, and you can spare a few
hours to help, it is always appreciated.
The following day, Monday 8th,
we held a one day clinic at Tushingham which Bob stayed over to teach. We were
divided into two groups and each had two sessions, the first group
concentrating on reining skills and the second on a variety of tasks. I think
by the end of the day we had all made progress and would like to pass on a big
thanks to Bob for the help he gave us.
This
year's WES Championship Show was well represented by Area 2, with Penny Connah,
Douglas McGuire, Fiona Weatherston, Andrew Denton, Janette Keeley and Tim
Keeley all successfully taking part. Fiona and Skipkas Lucky Lady (Chelsea to
her friends) on their first visit to the Championships, and first year of
showing, came 4th in the Go-Rounds for Novice Rider Trail, giving them a place
in the final. They were also placed 5th in the Novice Rider Pleasure out of a
very large class. Our sincere congratulations go to you
all.
We we
be having a clinic at Tushingham Arena on 12th October with Scherie. Please
send your entry forms in to Elaine by 7th October, or you will not be included,
as this is the last possible date to confirm numbers and times with Tushingham.
Elaine works very hard not to disappoint, but we do have a
deadline.
On Saturday 1st November we will be holding our AGM, so please come along and
show your support. We will be presenting the Annual Awards, plus holding the
usual and popular Bring & Buy. This year sees the return of the quiz
organised by John, including (rumour has it) questions on the WES Rule
Book!
On
Thursday 18th December our Christmas Party is being held at the Ramada,
Chester, and promises to be a really good evening (menu sounds fab). The time
is 7.30 for 8pm. Please return your booking forms, with cheques made payable to
WES Area 2, to Lindsey no later than 1st November, or bring it with you to the
AGM. We look forward to seeing you all there.
